Lord’s is the home ground of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and the symbolic centre of world cricket. The Old Tavern’s and Hotel next to the site is demolished in the 1960s to create space for the Tavern Stand. Lord’s still retained some of the character of a village green surrounded by a wide range from small and vast buildings. The pavilion originally designed by Thomas and Frank Verity in the 1880s dominates the views of the ground in the late 19th century. It is massive in appearance with a thin metal roof sheltering the MCC members from the summer sun. Developments around perimeter of the Lord’s ground made a village green to a virtual stadium. The Verity stand started in a grand manner. Colonnade of brick arches supporting the terraces enclosed the perimeter of the ground. In the year of 1984, MCC decided that the Mount Stand should be rebuilt and this is when Hopkins and Partners got a chance to redesign the Mount Stand of today.
